This can include payments made in stores, online, or through peer-to-peer (P2P) transfers.
\n

A mobile point of sale system is a great way to accept contactless payments.

\n
These devices might run mobile wallet apps or peer-to-peer mobile payment apps. Or, they might enable transactions via SMS. Consumers can use mobile payment apps or use their credit card to check out on mobile ecommerce sites.
\n
Popular mobile wallet apps include Apple Pay and Google Pay and accelerated checkout apps like Shop Pay. Popular peer-to-peer mobile payment apps include Venmo, PayPal, CashApp, and Zelle.
\n
5 types of mobile payments
\n
Mobile payments take five main forms. While each has its unique features, all achieve a near-instantaneous transfer of money from one account to another.
\n
1. Mobile wallet
\n
Mobile wallet services include apps like Google Pay, Apple Pay, and Samsung Pay. These services run on computers, smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches, and link to a customer’s credit card, debit card, or bank account.
\n
Once a person sets up their mobile wallet account, they can use these devices much like they’d use a credit card. In a brick-and-mortar store, they can tap their device on a smartwatch or a tablet on a payment terminal equipped with an NFC (near-field communication) radio. Online, they can use their mobile wallet account on many merchants’ checkout pages by selecting a mobile wallet icon (such as Apple Pay) from among the checkout options.
\n
Shopify’s own Shop Pay is an accelerated checkout that saves customer information for easier payments on both mobile and desktop. This works similarly to a mobile wallet in that it facilitates speedy mobile payments when customers shop online.
\n
2. Mobile ecommerce
\n
This category, also known as m-commerce, describes any type of transaction one makes on a mobile device. If a shopper makes a purchase on their mobile device’s browser or on a merchant’s proprietary app, that qualifies as a mobile ecommerce payment. Mobile payments on ecommerce stores can be completed using a credit card, a mobile wallet, or an accelerated checkout like Shop Pay.
\n
A fast, mobile-first Shopify theme can help create a smoother journey from product discovery to checkout on smaller screens.
\n

Customers can make online purchases with credit cards using mobile commerce.

\n
3. Mobile peer-to-peer
\n
This type of transaction, which runs on mobile payment apps like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, and CashApp, allows individuals to transfer money to other individuals via a mobile app or a webpage. Some of these services—most notably PayPal—enjoy wide acceptance from small business retailers. This means you can pay a business owner using PayPal instead of using a credit card.
\n
4. SMS payments
\n
SMS payments let people make payments by sending an SMS to a specific phone number. Americans, who largely own smartphones, rarely make SMS payments. In parts of the developing world, however, SMS payments are prevalent and widely trusted.
\n
5. Mobile payments at a point of sale
\n
In a mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) scenario, a customer uses their credit card or mobile device to tap and pay on a mobile payment terminal, usually connected to a mobile device like a tablet. Customers can also insert a credit card into the chip reader or swipe on the mobile POS for a NFC transaction. At this point, your point-of-sale software takes over, transmitting mobile payment data to financial institutions and transferring money to your account.
\n

Customers can tap a credit card to make a mobile payment on retail purchases using Shopify’s POS Go.

\n
Shopify offers a mobile POS called POS Go that allows you to break free from the checkout counter and close sales on the floor—or curbside. To use Shopify for mobile payments, you’ll need to activate Shopify Payments on your store, and have the Point of Sale channel installed.
\n
💡 Learn more about POS systems for mobile payments:
\n
\n
What POS hardware do stores need?
\n
How to choose the best POS system
\n
What is a mobile POS system?
\n
Why do small businesses need a POS system?
\n
Learn how Shopify POS can help your business accept mobile payments
\n
\n
Benefits of mobile payments
\n
Whether you’re accepting mobile payments online, contactless payments at a point of sale, or using Apple Pay and Google Pay payment apps, there are several advantages for both you and your customers. The benefits of accepting mobile payment methods include:
\n
Convenience for the customer
\n
Mobile payments eliminate a barrier to finalizing a customer’s purchases. Customers can pay conveniently by tapping a phone or credit card at a point of sale, or they can make online transactions using their credit card or other payment apps like Google Pay, Shop Pay, or Apple Pay.
\n
A secure payment type
\n
Mobile payments are among the most secure forms of commerce. That’s because they’re performed on mobile devices that tend to require some form of authentication, typically in the form of a fingerprint, facial recognition, or a passcode. The devices also encrypt their transmissions, giving thieves a very minimal chance of intercepting customer data.
\n

Shop Pay includes free fraud protection on eligible orders with Shopify Protect.

\n
Speed of transaction
\n
Financial institutions process mobile payments in the blink of an eye. This makes mobile checkout as fast as a credit card transaction—if not faster. When you accept mobile payments, you remove friction and barriers for your customers.
\n
Popularity among consumers
\n
More customers are spending more money using mobile payments. By 2027, it’s expected that global consumers will spend $6,007 billion per year using mobile payments. Financial analysts expect this figure to more than triple within the next five years.
\n
Accept mobile payments for your business
\n

Apple Pay is an example of a mobile wallet app that allows users to make a mobile payment at a brick-and-mortar store.

\n
As more and more shopping shifts to mobile platforms, payment systems will make a similar shift. Customers, always in search of convenience and flexibility, are increasingly embracing mobile payments—particularly given the level of security they provide.
\n
Merchants will benefit, too. Some mobile payment apps like Venmo and Square charge fees to merchants that are very similar to credit card fees. Other apps, like Apple Pay, don’t charge merchants at all. This lets business owners benefit from the convenience and security of mobile payments without taking a larger than usual financial hit. Small business owners that enable their company to accept mobile payment methods will likely reap the benefits that come along with them.
\n
\n
\n
Mobile payment FAQ
\n
\n
What is mobile payment and how does it work?
\n
\n
\n
A mobile payment is a contactless way of paying that involves a mobile device such as a mobile phone, a smartwatch, or a tablet. Make sure it displays well at smaller sizes and in both a square and a circle crop for the multiple places YouTube will use your channel icon.
\n
Create your channel art
\n
Adding channel art is a great way to show off your brand’s personality and create a visually engaging YouTube profile. Your channel art should be under four megabytes and at least 2048 pixels x 1152 pixels, although YouTube recommends going with 2560 pixels x 1440 pixels for best results on all devices.
\n

YouTube will show you what your chosen channel art looks like on different devices.

\n
YouTube will give you a preview of each image to show you how it will be displayed on multiple devices. Click your profile picture and go to the YouTube Studio. Select Settings in the navigation bar, click the Channel tab, and go to Feature Eligibility. You’ll see the option to verify your phone number under the intermediate features.
\n
\n
Planning your YouTube content
\n
Once your channel is set up, the fun can begin. It’s time to start planning your videos and creating content that attracts and converts your ideal customer.
\n
1. Find your YouTube niche
\n
Your niche is essentially what you’ll become known for on YouTube. For example, if you run a beauty brand, you’ll create videos within that niche—maybe you’ll share some makeup tutorials or answer beauty Q&As.
\n
For best results, go deep with your niche and choose a niche within a niche. Instead of settling on “beauty” in general, could you niche further into sustainable cosmetics or curly hair care?
\n
2. Identify your target audience
\n
Who do you want to reach on YouTube? Your target audience should be those most likely to resonate with your content and buy your products. It’s much easier to come up with content ideas, make videos, and promote your brand when you know exactly who you’re talking to.
\n
When identifying your target audience, consider:
\n
\n
Demographic information, like age, location, gender, income, and educational achievement levels
\n
Psychographic information, like interests, behavior, challenges, and dreams
\n
\n
3. Create a unique value proposition
\n
Your unique value proposition should bring together your niche and your target audience in a way that makes your brand memorable. It’s essentially the reason why people should watch your channel and what they’ll take away from your videos.
\n
For example, your unique value proposition might be helping women with curly hair tame their locks through easy-to-follow tutorials. Or it might be spotlighting the craftspeople behind the products you make to raise awareness of small communities and traditional manufacturing techniques.
\n
4. Find and analyze your competitors
\n
Who are you up against? There’s nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition, but having total visibility of what kind of content is already out there will help you map your own strategy. More than that, understanding what videos your competitors are creating will help you find your own place in the market.
\n
Run a simple YouTube search using relevant industry keywords to find channels that:
\n
\n
Share the same audiences as you
\n
Create content similar to yours
\n
Have a similar niche or unique value proposition
\n
\n
5. Build a list of video ideas
\n
Now it’s time to start compiling a list of potential video ideas. Start big—you can hone it down later. Here are some tactics you can use to spark ideas:
\n
\n
Check customer support tickets for FAQs.
\n
Get inspiration from competitor channels.
\n
Stay on top of news in your niche.
\n
Check out the trending topics in your niche.
\n
\n
Consider what types of video you’ll create. Will you post educational videos that show viewers how to do something? Will you tell brand stories using beautiful videography and behind-the-scenes footage? Or will you share entertaining videos aimed at making viewers laugh?
\n
Vat19, an ecommerce gift shop that specializes in offbeat products, has built an impressive online empire with its engaging, highly targeted content. Its YouTube strategy focuses on building absurdist comedy sketches around its wide selection of novelty gifts to introduce new products to its audience. It’s currently sitting at nearly nine million YouTube subscribers, which means this approach is definitely paying off.
\n
6. Run keyword research
\n
Ultimately, YouTube is a search engine that uses keywords to determine whether a video will be useful to a searcher. Use a keyword tool like Ahrefs, SEMRush, or Moz to find popular keywords in your niche. When you know what search terms your target audience are using, you can incorporate them into your videos and content strategy to make sure you’re showing up in the right searches.
\n
Shooting and editing videos
\n
The good news is, you don’t need to be a pro videographer to make great YouTube videos. In fact, anyone with a smartphone can shoot high-quality footage—with a few extra tweaks on an editing app, you’ll barely notice the difference.
\n
Once you’re ready to start shooting, here’s what to do.
\n
1. Choose the right equipment
\n
In short, starting a YouTube channel is relatively cheap—you just need a smartphone and some time to start creating. But if you feel limited by the quality of your phone and what you can do with it, consider investing in some videography equipment.
\n
Here’s a list of items you might need to get started:
\n
\n
DSLR video camera or a smartphone
\n
External microphone
\n
Lighting equipment
\n
Video editing app or software
\n
Somewhere to store your video files
\n
A tripod or a portable phone holder
\n
\n
2. Shoot your videos
\n
When it comes to shooting your videos, think about how you’ll frame the content, any scripts you might need, and where you’re going to film. For example, if you film indoors, you might need to consider the lighting more than if you were shooting outdoors.
\n
Before you set up your camera, consider:
\n
\n
What you’re going to say in the video (if anything)
\n
The structure of your video (creating a storyboard helps)
\n
Whether you need any additional people to feature in the video
\n
The main message you’re delivering
\n
Where you’re going to film the footage (Do you need total silence? Will the weather affect your plans?)
\n
How you’ll organize the footage you capture ready for editing
\n
\n
3. Post your first video
\n
This is where it all starts to come together. Your video is as good as it can be and you’re ready for your audience to devour your useful tips.
\n
Here’s how to upload a YouTube video:
\n
\n
Click the camera icon next to your profile picture.
\n
Select Upload Video”
\n
Select the files you want to upload.
\n
Give your video a title.
\n
Add a thumbnail.
\n
Write a description of your video (include keywords and a call to action).
\n
Choose the relevant categories your video falls under.
\n
Once it has rendered, click Finish.
\n
Voila! Your video is uploaded and ready to view.
\n
\n
Growing your YouTube channel
\n
1. Get your first 1,000 subscribers
\n
Your first 1,000 subscribers are the hardest to get. You have to prove that your channel is worth watching and that you have content that’s relevant to their needs.
\n
Here are some tips for getting your first 1,000 YouTube subscribers:
\n
\n
Break it down into smaller steps and aim to get 100 new subscribers a month.
\n
Make it easy for viewers to subscribe by adding a YouTube Subscribe Button to your videos.
\n
Add a YouTube sSubscribe link in your video descriptions.
\n
Encourage your newsletter subscribers and social media followers to subscribe to your YouTube channel.
\n
Identify which videos get the most views and create more of the same.
\n
\n
2. Build a community
\n
Community is a powerful tool on YouTube. The more people you have vouching for you and your channel, the easier it is to reach more viewers. Start by optimizing your videos for visibility with relevant keywords and engaging with similar existing channels. You can also poll your audience about what content they want to see, run contests and giveaways to create a buzz, and film series that ensure viewers come back for more.
\n
3. Consistency is key
\n
You don’t need to publish a new video every day—that’s impossible with everything else you have to do. Instead, create a schedule that’s realistic and comfortable. For example, you might decide to upload two videos a month, such as one tutorial and one behind-the-scenes sneak peek.
\n
Once you’ve created your schedule, stick to it. Viewers will start to expect and anticipate your next upload, which creates a sense of excitement around your channel.
\n

Blue Apron keeps its YouTube channel up to date with regular recipe videos.

\n
4. Cross-promote your channel on other platforms
\n
If you have a decent following on other platforms, like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or your newsletter, promote your YouTube channel there. Invite existing followers to join you on Facebook, either by sharing a link in your social media bio or including a call-out at the bottom of every newsletter. Don’t forget to add a link to your website, too.
\n

Stojo includes a link to its YouTube channel in its website footer.

\n
5. Collaborate with other creators
\n
Take advantage of YouTube’s extensive influencer and creator communities. Identify channels that have a similar audience to yours and reach out to collaborate. There are plenty of ways you can work with other YouTubers, such as:
\n
\n
Creating a joint video using clips from both sides
\n
Running a takeover on another creator’s channel where you can introduce your brand to their audience
\n
Sending a product to your chosen creator for them to film an unboxing video or a review
\n
\n

ColourPop collaborates with beauty bloggers to promote its products

\n
6. Lean on useful tools
\n
YouTube tools optimize your videos, helping you create better content quicker to get your videos in front of the right people fast.
\n
Here are some must-have YouTube tools we recommend using:
\n
\n
Video editor: Use editing software to cut clips together and enhance the quality of your footage. iMovie and Windows Video Editor are free.
\n
Keyword research tool: Find relevant keywords to create videos about with tools like Google Keyword Planner (free), SEMRush, and Ahrefs.
\n
Performance tools: Track the performance of your YouTube channel and test out different title and description variations with TubeBuddy or Social Blade.
\n
YouTube Studio: Manage your channel on the go with YouTube Studio, which lets you monitor your performance and organize videos from your mobile.
\n
\n
Advanced YouTube tips: Pro tips to make your YouTube channel stand out
\n
\n
Monetize your channel with ads.
\n
Set up Shopping on YouTube to promote your products.
\n
Add a watermark to your videos to increase brand awareness.
\n
Enable an automatic subscription prompt on your videos.
\n
Link info cards to relevant content on your website.
\n
Incorporate relevant end screens to increase viewer retention rates.
\n
Create custom thumbnails that reflect your unique branding.
\n
\n
Start your own YouTube channel
\n
Creating a YouTube channel will give you a competitive edge and build trust and awareness around your brand. Take the time to figure out who you want to target and what your unique value proposition will be. Then, come up with video ideas that will resonate with those people.
\n
Once your channel is up and running, you can focus on getting more views and subscribers through monetization methods, creator collaborations, and cross-promoting your channel on other platforms.
\n

\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n

\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
How to start a YouTube channel FAQ
\n
\n
Is it worth it to start a YouTube channel?
\n
\n
\n
Starting a YouTube channel can be a rewarding experience, but whether or not it is worth it largely depends on your goals and expectations. Here are some factors to consider:
\n
\n
Passion. If you are passionate about a particular topic or niche, starting a YouTube channel can be a great way to share your knowledge and connect with others who share your interests.
\n
Time. Creating quality content for your YouTube channel takes time and effort. If you are unable or unwilling to commit the necessary time, you may struggle to gain traction and grow your audience.
\n
Competition. YouTube is a crowded platform with millions of creators vying for attention. While this can be daunting, it also means there is almost certainly an audience for any topic or niche you are interested in.
\n
Revenue. While it is possible to make money from YouTube ads and sponsorships, it is unlikely to be a significant source of income unless you have a large and engaged audience.
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
How do I start a YouTube channel and get paid?
\n
\n
\n
\n
Create your channel and set up your profile.
\n
Find your YouTube niche.
\n
Identify your target audience.
\n
Find and analyze your competitors.
\n
Choose the right equipment.
\n
Get your first 1,000 subscribers.
\n
Monetize through YouTube ads.
\n
Add Shopping on YouTube to your channel.
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
How much will it cost to start a YouTube channel?
\n
\n
\n
Starting a YouTube channel doesn’t have to cost anything. All you need is a Google account, a smartphone, and free editing software. When your channel starts growing, you might want to invest in some more powerful editing tools, as well as keyword research and analytics tools.
\n
https://www.shopify.com/blog/start-a-youtube-channel-for-your-business
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n"}]},"page_header":{"background":null,"backgroundOpacity":100,"color":null,"fieldGroupName":"page_header","title":"YouTube Success Tips","opacity":100,"position":"on","size":{"desktop":64,"tablet":null,"mobile":null},"spaces":{"top":null,"bottom":null,"leftright":null,"units":"em"}},"link":"/blog/how-to-start-a-youtube-channel-2023"},{"id":"cG9zdDo1NjUx","title":"How To Start a Business in 2023: 11-Step Guide","date":"26.05.2023","schemaDate":"2023-05-26","modifiedGmt":"2023-07-26T08:30:49","slug":"how-to-start-a-business-in-2023-11-step-guide","acfSchemaPost":{"blogPostingImage":null},"categories":{"nodes":[{"id":"dGVybTox","name":"General Articles"}]},"levels":{"nodes":[]},"acfPost":{"fieldGroupName":"acfPost","excerpt":"Being your own boss starts with the decision to make the big leap. \r\nIf you’ve found us here, you’ve already taken that crucial first step. An order from your customer will be fulfilled and shipped by the vendor or manufacturer, skipping you as a middleman. You can get started with dropshipping by finding a product and dropshipping partner.
\n
💡 Tip: You can also dropship white label products, giving you the benefits of both a branded product and a low-lift business model.
\n
Curation or resale ideas
\n
Another way to start a business without your own products is through curation or resale. Some lifestyle and fashion brands will curate collections from a number of vendors or designers, buying inventory upfront. In this case, you will be responsible for inventory management and shipping. Research your product and audience
\n
Now that you have a killer idea, it’s time to validate it! Your product or business idea may excite you, but it’s only worth pursuing if there’s an audience (a.k.a. future customers) looking for it.
\n
There are many ways to do your research upfront before you start investing. You can look for gaps in the market, find an underserved audience, run a focus group, and investigate your competition.
\n
Finding a target audience
\n
Your target audience or target market refers to a group of potential customers for your brand. This is the group you’ll eventually aim all your marketing efforts and dollars toward. Your business will be viable if you have the funding to get it off the ground and you can identify a price that’ll turn a profit.
\n
Writing a business plan
\n
A business plan is a document you can use to help you secure funding from a bank or venture capital (VC) firm. But even if you’re not seeking outside funding, a business plan forces you to answer important questions about how you will run your business. It depends on many factors, such as whether or not you carry inventory or you need to lease space. Much of the money spent in the first year consists of reinvesting profits back into the business, not spending out of pocket. This is called “bootstrapping” and you can learn more about it later in this section.
\n
Accounting for all business costs
\n
Your startup costs in the first year will help you cover everything from setting up a website to buying inventory to running your first paid ads. Here’s what business owners reported as the breakdown of their spending in the first year:
\n

\n
🚨 Tip: Don’t forget to consider unexpected costs like business insurance, taxes, legal fees, and shipping costs.
\n
Conducting a break-even analysis
\n
A break-even analysis is the process of determining at what point your business (or product) becomes profitable. It’s a financial calculation used to determine the number of products you need to sell to cover your production costs.
\n
There are several benefits to conducting a break-even analysis:
\n
✅ It helps you make smart decisions about product pricing.
\n✅ It can mitigate risk and eliminate surprise.
\n✅ It sets informed targets for your business.
\n✅ It can identify any missing expenses.
\n
Determining profit margins
\n
A profit margin is the measure of a business’ profitability expressed as a percentage. Your profit margin will depend on the industry you’re in, the retail price ranges set by the market, and your costs. You may have a lower profit margin if you’re selling a high volume of goods (say, selling digital art prints) or a high profit margin if you sell luxury products.
\n
\n
💵 FREE TOOL: Profit Margin Calculator
\n
Determine selling prices for your products by entering your costs and markup. In a nutshell, there are three steps to setting prices:
\n
\n
Add up your variable costs, or the costs that change depending on the amount of product you produce.
\n
Add a profit margin.
\n
Don’t forget about fixed costs, or the consistent costs to do business that aren’t affected by how much you produce (think office space lease or utilities).
\n
\n
As you’re setting your prices, consider common pricing strategies like competitive pricing, value-based pricing, or keystone pricing. Note: Each strategy has its pros and cons and not all will be right for your unique business.
\n

\n
Bootstrapping your business
\n
Bootstrapping is the process of starting a business with little or no money and investing the profits back into the business as it grows. And app integrations can solve specific shipping issues or help you more easily manage inventory.
\n
Setting up shipping and fulfillment
\n
When deciding on a shipping strategy for your business, you’ll first need to decide how you will handle order fulfillment. For many new business owners, that means personally packaging and shipping orders one by one. Unless you choose a dropshipping or print-on-demand model, managing your own fulfillment in the early days helps you better understand all aspects of your business.
\n
As you grow, you may decide to outsource shipping and fulfillment to a third-party logistics (3PL) company. This will ensure a consistent experience across every customer touchpoint.
\n
Shooting product photos
\n
Photography is incredibly important for ecommerce brands that rely on 2D images to tell a story about a 3D product. Photography does a lot of heavy lifting as a stand-in for feeling or trying on the product in person. That’s why good ecommerce photography can increase buyer confidence—and conversion.
\n
Most business benefit from having two types of photos for their collections:
\n
\n
Product photos: These are generally detailed clear shots of the product itself, sometimes on a model, but almost always uncluttered and shot against a plain background. These are well-suited toward product and collection pages.
\n
Lifestyle photos: These are more aspirational shots that show your product in the context of an environment or action. They tell a story and inspire customers with ways to use or style a product within their own lives. These shots are useful for your home page, social media accounts, and digital lookbooks.
\n
\n
Using examples from Burst, a free stock photo resource for entrepreneurs, you can see the difference between the first product photo and the second lifestyle photo:
\n

\n
If you decide to go the DIY photography route due to budget constraints, you can still pull off professional looking photos with little more than a simple lighting kit and a smartphone.
\n
📚 Read: DIY Guide to the Perfect Product Photography Setup
\n
Your DIY photos may need a little editing to get them website-ready. Register your business
\n
Depending on the countries or regions where you do business, you may be subject to a set of rules that govern how you manufacture, market, and ship your products.
\n
First, you’ll need to decide on a business structure. In some cases, you will need to officially register your business. Check with your local government agency to ensure you’re doing business above board.
\n
Deciding on a business structure
\n
There are several types of business structures (or legal structures or business entities) to consider, but before you land on one, it’s important to understand the characteristics of each. For example, do you know the difference between a limited liability company (LLC) and a soleproprietorship? Is a C corp right for you?
\n
Dive into the below resources to learn more:
\n
\n
LLC: How to Start Limited Liability Company
\n
Sole proprietorship: A Guide to the Sole Proprietor Business Structure
\n
C Corporation: How to Form and Operate a C Corp
\n
B Corporation: How to Apply for B Corp Certification
\n
S Corporation: What is an S Corp? Definition and Guide
\n
\n
Whether you choose to be a sole proprietor or take on a business partner, be sure to clearly outline the business ownership details.
\n
Registering a business with the government and IRS
\n
In some cases, you may not need to officially register your business to get up and running. For example, in Canada, small businesses making under a certain threshold in revenue are not required to officially register or collect and submit sales tax. However, there are perks to registering your business with the CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) upfront, such as benefitting from certain protections.
\n
In the US, the requirements to get a business license can vary state to state, and in some cases you may not need one. If you do need a business license, be sure you have the following before starting your application:
\n
✅ Owner name and contact information
\n✅ Business name and contact information
\n✅ Your employer identification number (EIN) or equivalent
\n✅ Any required permits
\n✅ Any required forms or paperwork
\n✅ Associated fees with filing this paperwork
\n
Depending on your business structure and size, you may also need to register with the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) in order to collect sales tax and submit it at tax time.
\n
Securing business insurance
\n
It’s important to protect yourself, your business, and your employees in the event of unexpected hardship. Consider all the possible scenarios that could grind your business to a halt, including: natural disasters, health issues among staff, a bad batch of product, or even a lawsuit. Purchasing an insurance policy is the best protection.
\n
There are several types of business insurance to consider. These include: commercial property insurance, workers’ comp insurance, professional liability insurance, product liability insurance, and business interruption insurance, to name a few. Understand the features of each to see if they apply to you—you may also be interested in a business owner’s policy (BOP), which bundles many of the above types of coverage together.
\n
🛑 Note: Depending on the business structure, you may or may not be subject to personal liability in legal matters pertaining to your business (this would be normally covered by professional liability insurance). However, before you purchase an insurance policy, talk to a pro to see if personal liability protection is necessary for you.
\n
You may also want to implement other types of protections as you grow:
\n
\n
Offering employee health insurance alongside fair and competitive wages is a great way to attract and retain talent.
\n
Registering a trademark or filing for a patent can legally protect your intellectual property, like an invention or your business name.
\n
Writing and posting a set of terms and conditions that protect your company by outlining to customers what is legally required of them if they use your service.
\n
\n
💡 Tip: An insurance adviser or lawyer can help you sort which types of business insurance are right for your business.
\n
🦘 Jump back to: Table of contents
\n
9. Manage your money
\n
The key to a successful business can usually boil down to finding the right product for the right market at the right time. But sustaining that success depends on many other things happening behind the scenes. When you have a good handle on your finances, you’re ensuring that you’re not overspending and that you have a safety net if your luck changes.
\n
Opening a business bank account
\n
Setting up a business bank account is an important first step. At the very least, it allows you to separate your personal and business finances. At best, it allows you to build a good relationship with your bank as a partner in your long-term financial success.
\n
\n
Skip the bank
\n
Get paid faster by managing your money and business in one place with a free Shopify Balance account.
\n
<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyloaded\" src=\"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0070/7032/files/shopify-balance.jpg?v=1664300504\" alt=\"Plain yellow backdrop and two bank cards with chip and pin technology. Here are a few financial statements and concepts explained.
\n
Balance sheets
\n
A balance sheet lists your business’s assets, liabilities, and shareholder equity. Balance sheets offer a quick glance at how much your business is worth after all liabilities or debts and shareholder payouts are accounted for.
\n
Income statements
\n
An income statement (or earnings statement or profit and loss) calculates revenue minus expenses to tell you how much money your business is earning. These are usually prepared monthly, quarterly, or annually, depending on your business.
\n
Cash flow statements
\n
A cash flow statement (CFS) is a financial statement that summarizes the in and out cash transactions during a given period. This statement gives founders a detailed picture of the cash position of the company. Managing cash flow is essential to its ongoing financial health.
\n

\n

\n
Choosing small business accounting software
\n
Many business owners swear by a simple spreadsheet to manage their small business accounting, and this method is perfectly fine for most small businesses just starting out. If you want more functionality and automation, or you have a more complex business structure, there are several small business accounting tools on the market.
\n
💡 Tip: A professional accountant can help you navigate the ins and outs of business accounting, including advising you on accounting software and preparing you for tax time.
\n
Paying business tax
\n
Being ready for tax time means managing your finances all year long, not scrambling at the last minute. That’s because if your business owes taxes, you don’t want any surprises. Be sure you understand the business tax deadlines and the types of taxes you’re on the hook for, depending on your business structure.
\n
Remember that you can offset many types of purchases as tax deductions as a small business owner. This is a non-exhaustive list of those items:
\n
\n
Shipping costs
\n
Workspace rent and utility costs
\n
Fees for professional services (like accountants)
\n
Website fees
\n
Travel expenses
\n
\n
Check with your accountant before writing off any expense—rules around what qualifies as a business expense vary by industry and country.
\n
Charging tax
\n
Should your business be charging sales tax for online purchases? The answer isn’t that simple. This will depend on a number of factors including where you’re running your business, where your customer is located, the type of goods you sell (some products are non-taxable), and how much revenue you bring in.
\n
Once you’ve determined that you should be charging sales tax, you’ll need to apply for a sales tax permit (or tax number or EIN), set tax rates in your online store, collect taxes from eligible purchases, and remit those taxes at tax time.
\n
💡 Tip: Set collected taxes aside in a separate business bank account so that they remain untouched until tax time and do not get lumped in with earnings.
\n

\n
🦘 Jump back to: Table of contents
\n
Market and grow
\n
10. Take the time to learn analytics tools and get to know the terms. This will give you an accurate picture of your marketing spend and performance so you can double down on what works and stop what doesn’t.
\n
Social platforms often have native analytics dashboards to help you track the effectiveness of content and campaigns. Both winning the hearts and trust of well-established communities and creating a new one of your own takes consistency, authenticity, and a personal touch.
\n
Whether your target audience is breast cancer survivors, Indigenous communities, or drag queens, it’s important to understand the community you’re serving. Listen, engage, and ask for feedback as you grow.
\n
Many new brands opt to build businesses that serve the communities they’re already part of. This way, they have a deep understanding of their customers’ needs and gaps in the market. If you’re not part of the community you hope to target, ask yourself if you’re the best person to build for that group.
\n
\n
🍬 Success Story: Community is Central to This Marshmallow Brand’s Growth
\n
When the founders of XO Marshmallow moved their business from farmers markets to their online store, they brought their in-person touch with them. Their robust social communities help them gain valuable feedback and win new business through positive word of mouth.
\n
\n
Once you’ve built a community, it’s important to nurture it. Community management involves growing your relationship with your audience in public spaces. Effective community management has four parts:
\n
👀 Monitoring: tracking conversations that relate to your brand
\n💬 Engaging: proactively engaging with customers, leads, and influencers
\n🚔 Moderating: removing comments and conversations that don’t add value or violate the terms of your brand or the platform
\n📐 Measuring: analyzing how your brand is perceived and getting real, unfiltered feedback
\n
Customer service for marketing
\n
While customer service will be part of your ongoing day-to-day operations to help keep customers happy, consider it a marketing tool, too. Great customer service inspires word-of-mouth referrals—people want to share positive experiences. You can also modify your typical customer service communications to inform customers about upcoming promotions or new product launches and drive future sales in the process.
\n
🦘 Jump back to: Table of contents
\n
11. Additional funding can help you open a brick-and-mortar business, hire employees, or develop new products.
\n
Before you get started there are a few items to get in order:
\n
✅ Update your business plan with your vision for growth
\n✅ Gather your financial statements
\n✅ Write and practice your elevator pitch
\n✅ Find a business mentor to help you prepare to pitch and polish your business plan
\n
\n
Get access to the funds you need to grow
\n
Skip the lengthy paper applications and get quick access to funding to help your business thrive. It’s important to review the options available from each to decide which type of loan best suits your business. A financial adviser can help you make an informed decision.
\n
\n
💵 FREE TOOL: Business Loan Calculator
\n
Use this tool to calculate how much your loan will cost including total interest and monthly payments, and the length of time it will take to pay it back.
\n
\n
Business grants
\n
Small business grants are offered by many types of organizations. These organizations are looking to offer grants to small businesses that embody their organization’s purpose and add value to a particular community. With that in mind, the criteria for each grant varies widely.
\n
Small business grants are not loans and you don’t have to pay back the money you’re granted. However, there may be some non-monetary expectations that you are required to meet.
\n
Crowdfunding
\n
Crowdfunding involves running a private campaign, usually through a crowdfunding provider, to raise money for your business in advance of its launch, a growth milestone, or a new product. These funds come from the general population. They do not need to be paid back, but brands often offer incentives like products, membership, or swag.
\n

\n

\n

\n
Growing your team
\n
To meet your long-term business growth goals, you’ll likely not be able to wear every hat forever. As you grow, focus on the aspects of running the business that you like the most and the ones that best suit your skillset. For the rest: delegate. There are three main ways to get some tasks off your plate.
\n
Initially, you can use bot apps to automate your processes. These apps can do everything from send customer communication to generate financial reports, freeing you up to do more.
\n
But soon, you’ll likely need human help, especially if you need to offload manual tasks or hire employees for customer service. If your brand guidelines didn’t include any philosophy around hiring, it still serves as a great jumping off point to hone in on what qualities you’re looking for in new hires.
\n
If you’re not ready to set up payroll or manage employees, outsourcing is another way to increase your humanpower without cloning yourself. Freelancers, virtual assistants, and contract employees are all options for growing businesses.
\n
Selling in international markets
\n
Another way to grow your brand is to expand into other markets. That might be finding new audiences within your existing sales markets or selling across borders. Before diving head first into global ecommerce, be sure to do your homework. Each country will have a specific set of regulations. Seek the advice of a lawyer before you sell in or open locations or warehouses abroad.
\n
\n
Level up with Shopify Plus
\n
Ready to take your business to the next level? The seamless flow of questions, imagery, and tips for measuring has allowed more than 18 million women find their size—and often, it’s not the size they expected.
\n
“Sixty-five percent to seventy percent of women who do our fitting room online come to find out we’re recommending a size that is different than the size they’re wearing,” says Heidi. “That’s a big leap of faith.”
\n
To ease the impact of that leap, ThirdLove ran a program called Try Before You Buy, allowing customers to try out bras free of risk (customers pay only the shipping cost) to fully experience the ThirdLove difference.
\n

ThirdLove initially ran a Try Before You Buy program to gain customers’ trust and build brand recognition. ThirdLove

\n
“That marketing program in the early days of ThirdLove before we had brand recognition was huge for us, because it really got customers over the hurdle of being worried about trying a new brand and a new size,” Heidi says.
\n
Adapting to evolving customer needs
\n
A lot has changed in the past decade, including customers’ preferences for bras. It’s an evolution ThirdLove has adapted to by increasing its product offerings. “We built our business with the underwire bra as the core,” says Heidi. “During COVID, we saw a surge in demand for wireless.”
\n
Not only did ThirdLove offer more wireless options, it also entered the sports bra market. Other brands traditionally use letter sizing for sports bras (small, medium, large). ThirdLove took a different approach.
\n
“We launched sports bras about a year ago, and that’s been really amazing, because there’s a lot of companies selling sports bras, but they’re not really coming at it from the fit perspective that we do,” says Heidi. “So our sports bras have a cup and a band associated with them, just like regular bra sizing.”
\n

ThirdLove expanded its product offering, creating sports bras, athleticwear, and loungewear, by listening to customer needs.ThirdLove

\n
In addition to sports bras, ThirdLove continues to meet customers where they are by launching new products based on trends and demand: The company has recently ventured into both athletic wear and loungewear.
\n
To hear more about ThirdLove’s connection to San Francisco and its journey from fundraising to retail expansion, listen to Heidi’s full interview on Shopify Masters.
\n
https://www.shopify.com/blog/thirdlove-market-fit
\n"}]},"page_header":{"background":null,"backgroundOpacity":100,"color":null,"fieldGroupName":"page_header","title":"ThirdLove: Bra Sizing","opacity":100,"position":"on","size":{"desktop":64,"tablet":null,"mobile":null},"spaces":{"top":null,"bottom":null,"leftright":null,"units":"em"}},"link":"/blog/80-of-people-wear-the-wrong-bra-size-heres-how-thirdlove-is-making-things-right"},{"id":"cG9zdDo1NjM5","title":"What Is Remarketing? For example, if a shopper adds an item to their cart but doesn’t check out, remarketing uses that information to serve them ads on social media, Google, and other sites to encourage them to buy the product.
\n
It’s called remarketing because you’re essentially “re”-marketing to people who have already discovered your brand and interacted with it in some way, whether that’s by browsing a product category, adding an item to their cart, or visiting a landing page without signing up for your newsletter. It’s a second chance to convert and a particularly useful method for re-engaging past customers and reminding them why they chose you in the first place.
\n
How remarketing works
\n
Remarketing tracks user data to understand where users have been on your site and what actions they have taken (or, more importantly, haven’t taken). It’s most commonly used to serve ads to consumers based on their previous browsing history, which can make campaigns incredibly targeted and personalized.
\n
In simpler terms, remarketing works like this:
\n
\n
A shopper visits your website.
\n
That shopper leaves your website and is tracked through their cookies (more on that below).
\n
The shopper sees your remarketing ads on other websites, on social media, and in their inbox.
\n
The shopper clicks on your ads and returns to your website.
\n
The shopper takes the action you want them to take.
\n
\n
Three out of five online users notice (and consider clicking) ads showing products they’ve previously viewed, making remarketing campaigns a powerful tool for online retailers.
\n
Remarketing vs. retargeting: What’s the difference?
\n
You might see the terms remarketing and retargeting used interchangeably. While they are fairly similar in their end goal, there are a couple of key differences.
\n
Retargeting is mostly focused on paid ads. It uses shopper data to automatically serve relevant ads on Google and social media.
\n
Remarketing, on the other hand, collects customer information and uses that to create lists and send targeted emails. Landing directly in shopper inboxes creates a deeper, more personal connection and allows for more specific upselling and messaging.
\n

\n
Linenbundle and Lazy Oaf both use remarketing ads in Gmail to re-engage shoppers who have previously visited their sites.
\n
Using remarketing lists
\n
Remarketing lists are lists of shoppers who have taken (or not taken) a specific action on your site. You can create a list of people who have visited a product category page, the checkout page, or even your homepage over a certain period of time.
\n
When a customer visits each page on your site, they leave a cookie in their wake, which remarketing tools can use to collect their information and map out their customer journey. When customers land on your homepage, a product category page, or the checkout, their cookie is added to the remarketing list associated with the specific action they’ve taken.
\n
You can create as many remarketing lists as you like and get as detailed as you wish, creating lists for highly targeted actions like visiting a specific offers page or product page. You’re then able to send ads and email campaigns to each of these email lists, personalizing the messaging to match their browsing behavior.
\n
Using remarketing pixel tags
\n
Remarketing pixel tags are small pieces of code on a webpage that allow your site to place and track customer cookies (a.k.a. the crumbs left by past visitors—hence their sweet-treat name). This is possible because every visitor has an individual ID that enables their activity to be tracked.
\n
The ad server or remarketing tool you use can access these unique ID codes and add them to the most relevant remarketing lists. If someone signs up for your newsletter and makes it through to the “thank you” page, they’ll be added to one list, and if they add an item to their cart but don’t purchase it, they’ll automatically be added to another list.
\n
4 types of remarketing campaigns
\n
Remarketing is a versatile marketing strategy. The way you use it will depend on what you hope to achieve, the type of customers you want to reach, and how you want to reach them. There are several ways remarketing can help you do this with four different ad types.
\n
1. Standard remarketing
\n
Standard remarketing is the most common form of remarketing. It tracks and targets customers who have visited your website using pixel tags and their cookie data. For example, you can remarket to everyone who has visited your homepage in the past month via a banner or text ad on Google, an email, or a social media ad.
\n

\n
Fanatics showcases a selection of products to shoppers who have previously visited the brand’s website.
\n
2. Dynamic remarketing
\n
Dynamic remarketing is particularly useful. It drills down to the exact products a visitor has viewed on your website or added to their cart and serves them dynamic ads showing that particular product. To run this type of marketing campaign via Google, social media, or email, you need to submit a product feed to the platform you want to serve the ads on.
\n

\n
Lexi’s uses dynamic remarketing ads to serve a relevant product catalog to past website visitors—with a discount for an added incentive.
\n
3. Display remarketing
\n
Display remarketing is a simple way to reach shoppers who have visited your site. It tracks customers who have shown an interest in your brand and products and serves them visual ads of your brand when they visit another website. Display ads can be shown on websites that are part of the Google display network.
\n

\n
Harry’s uses display remarketing to encourage previous website visitors to sign up for a trial.
\n
4. Search remarketing
\n
Search remarketing is a quick way to grab the attention of past website visitors in search engines. It automatically customizes your search ads based on the past browsing behavior of website visitors. For example, if someone has visited a specific product page without purchasing, search remarketing will serve them PPC results that mention the product page.
\n
How to run a remarketing campaign in Google Ads
\n
You can run multiple types of retargeting campaigns at the same time. Consider what you want to achieve and the goals of each campaign before you get started, and then use the steps below to walk through the process.
\n
Create a remarketing list
\n
1. In Google Ads, navigate to your Shared Library and click “Audience manager.”
\n
<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyloaded alignnone\" src=\"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0070/7032/files/audience_manager.png?format=webp&v=1685109749\" alt=\"What Is Remarketing? If you haven’t already added the pixel tag to your website, you’ll be notified to do so by navigating to “Your data sources” in the menu on the left and then selecting Set up tag under the Google Analytics tag section. Here, you can choose your remarketing settings. You’ll then need to add it to the relevant pages of your site. Customize your settings and save.
\n
<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyloaded alignnone\" src=\"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0070/7032/files/google_ads_tag_data_source.png?format=webp&v=1685109789\" alt=\"What Is Remarketing? Next, click on Segments in the menu on the left side. Then click the blue plus sign. This will open a menu where you can choose what kind of list you’d like to create. Options include website visitors, mobile app users, YouTube users, customer emails, or a custom combination.
\n
<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyloaded alignnone\" src=\"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0070/7032/files/create_remarketing_list.png?format=webp&v=1685109826\" alt=\"What Is Remarketing? But it’s a crucial tool in monitoring and measuring the success of your remarketing campaigns.
\n
Here are some key ways you can use Google Analytics to track your campaigns:
\n
\n
Check for increased page views: At its most basic level, Google Analytics will show you whether there has been an increase in visitors to specific pages on your site. If you’re running an ad on a specific product page, you’ll be able to see if the number of visitors has increased since running your campaign and where they’re coming from.
\n
Create events: If your goal is to get shoppers to take certain actions when they land on your site, you can set up events in Google Analytics to identify whether there is an increase in the number of actions taken once your remarketing campaign is running.
\n
Test remarketing ads: You can create multiple ad campaigns and serve them to identical remarketing audiences to see which ones are most successful. You can use Google Analytics to create separate audiences that share the same attributes and send them different versions of your remarketing campaign. This guide shows you how to create different audiences in Google Analytics.
\n
\n
Stay on top of your campaigns by regularly checking their success, tweaking elements that aren’t performing so well, and testing each campaign until it’s getting the results you want.
\n
Boost your conversion rates with a remarketing campaign
\n
Remarketing is a great way to re-engage distracted website users. They’re hot leads because they’ve already shown interest in your brand, but maybe they just need you to jog their memory. Instead of losing potential customers into the ether as soon as they leave your site, you can bring them back with a well-thought-out remarketing strategy and ad campaigns that are highly targeted and relevant to their interests and previous browsing behavior.
\n

\n
\n
\n
\n
\n

\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Remarketing FAQ
\n
\n
What is meant by remarketing?
\n
\n
Remarketing is a digital marketing strategy used to send personalized ads to shoppers who have already visited a website or product page without taking action. It uses visitor cookies to track what pages shoppers have visited and retargets them with relevant ads.
\n
\n
\n
\n
What is a remarketing campaign?
\n
\n
Remarketing campaigns let you retarget users who have previously visited your website with relevant ads. Remarketing uses visitor cookies to track what pages someone has visited and uses this information to customize display and search ads accordingly.
\n
\n
\n
\n
What are the types of remarketing?
\n
\n
\n
\n
Standard remarketing
\n
Dynamic remarketing
\n
Display remarketing
\n
Search remarketing
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
What is retargeting vs. remarketing?
\n
\n
Retargeting is the act of using paid ads to target users who have already visited your website. While it has a similar goal, remarketing is a strategy used to serve highly targeted email campaigns based on the pages a user has visited on your website.
\n
\n
\n
\n
What is a cookie?
\n
\n
\n
Cookies are files that contain pieces of data about a website visitor that can be used to identify information like location and browsing behavior. People who use social media want customer service at their fingertips and they want it instantly. And the benefits of providing good customer service are worth it. Expect increased brand loyalty, happier customers, and more revenue.
\n
In this post, you’ll learn what social media customer service involves and how you can create a social customer service strategy that works for you.
\n
\n
Table of Contents
\n
\n
What is social media customer service?
\n
Benefits of social media customer service
\n
Social media customer service strategy
\n
Social media customer service tools
\n
Social media customer service examples
\n
Take your social media customer service to the next level
\n
Social media customer service FAQ
\n
\n
\n
What is social media customer service?
\n
Social media customer service is the process of providing support and live chat customer service on social media channels like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. It allows brands to respond to customer service requests, customer issues, feedback, and complaints in minutes, without the need for lengthy calls.
\n
Today, all major social platforms have built-in features that help brands find customer messages and provide guidance. Doing this not only provides in-the-moment support, but can lead to increased loyalty, better brand awareness, and more revenue.
\n
Social customer service is ecommerce
\n
Pair shoppers’ sky-high expectations with the sheer amount of market competition and it’s clear good ecommerce customer service isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a must-have.
\n
Providing support via popular social media channels helps you remove friction from the buying process by responding with real-time answers. This might mean providing extra product information and answering hesitations in the pre-purchase phase, following up on orders and deliveries post-purchase, or responding to customer feedback on products or service.
\n

\n
Benefits of social media customer service
\n
The level of customer service you provide can have a dramatic impact on your business. A great experience can turn one-time buyers into lifelong customers, while a bad experience can lead to a loss of sales, bad press, and unhappy shoppers.
\n
Here are some benefits of social media customer service:
\n
\n
Influence purchasing decisions: 50% of shoppers say getting a quick response from the customer service team influences their decision to buy.
\n
Increase revenue: Shoppers spend 20% to 40% more with brands that respond quickly to questions and complaints on social media, and 59% are willing to pay a premium to get “outstanding” customer service.
\n
Provide multiple communication options: People don’t want to spend hours in a hold queue. Instead, 40% of shoppers say that multiple communication options are the most important customer service feature a brand can have.
\n
Boost brand loyalty: 77% of consumers say that a good customer service experience is critical to earning their brand loyalty.
\n
\n
Social media customer service strategy
\n
Now that you know how important social media customer service is for your business, here’s how you can implement it on your social media channels and how to improve customer service overall.
\n
1. Choose the right channels
\n
Start by finding the social platforms your audience uses the most. If shoppers are most active on Instagram but you’re only checking posts on Twitter, you’re going to miss a ton of customer service requests. In fact, 40% of consumers expect brands to problem-solve on their favorite channels. For most brands, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are the top players, but you might also find that customers reach out on LinkedIn, TikTok, and Pinterest too.
\n
\n
TIP: Find out where your customers are already hanging out by searching social media for likes, tags, and mentions of your brand. You can also use a dedicated social listening tool to track every mention of your brand and see where you get the most customer service questions.
\n
\n
2. Use a dedicated support account
\n
Sixty-four percent of Twitter users say they would rather message a dedicated support handle than get on the phone. While small brands can get away with one handle on each platform, bigger merchants might find they benefit from a dedicated support account. This also makes it easier for you to find relevant customer questions amongst all the noise and brand mentions.
\n
\n
TIP: Assign a dedicated handle to your customer service team who is better equipped to deal with customer service questions than your marketing team. If a customer reaches out to your main handle, encourage your marketing team to redirect them to the dedicated support account.
\n
\n
3. Set expectations early
\n
You can’t be everywhere at once. Let customers know when they’re likely to receive a response from you by sharing your customer support operating hours and average reply time in the bio of your dedicated support account.
\n
\n
TIP: Make use of support-focused social media features, like Facebook’s Instant Replies tool and Twitter’s Quick Replies feature, that let you send a canned response ASAP. Include your reply times and operating hours in your canned message.
\n
\n
4. Create a brand voice
\n
Maintain a cohesive voice across all your social media channels by designing a brand voice. This helps your customer service team stay on-brand and ensure you’re creating a consistent social media presence.
\n
\n
TIP: Put together a brand voice document that outlines what your customer service team can and can’t say, words they can use, and specific occasions where they’re allowed to use humor or a more informal tone.
\n
\n
5. Mirror customer emotions
\n
Responding to customer support enquiries on social media isn’t the same as sharing your average social post. Often, shoppers will be angry, upset, or frustrated, which requires a certain amount of tact in your responses. The last thing you want to do is annoy a customer further by taking their complaint lightly.
\n
\n
TIP: Take the customer’s lead. If they have a serious problem, avoid minimizing their frustration and limit your use of emojis. Similarly, if a shopper has a trivial question or includes a joke in their initial communication, reflect that in your responses. This will also help your team improve their customer service skills.
\n
\n
6. Find the balance between private and public
\n
One key difference between social customer service and traditional customer service is that social media is very public. Everyone can see your responses, which is why it’s critical to decide when to take your conversation to the DM (direct message). Not everything can be resolved in a single message and certainly not within the character limit that some social platforms are limited to.
\n
\n
TIP: Take conversations that require a lot of back-and-forths or that include sensitive personal information to the customer’s DMs or find another way to communicate, like phone or email.
\n
\n
7. Get ahead of common questions
\n
You’ll probably find you get a lot of similar questions. When this happens, it’s a sign you may need to provide additional information on your site or throughout the buying journey.
\n
\n
TIP: Create a resource center or an FAQ page where you can answer the most common questions. Alternatively, build a library of templated answers that your customer service team can send to customers quickly.
\n
\n
8. Turn negative feedback into a good customer experience
\n
Thirty-three percent of customers use social media channels to air their complaints to brands. While it might feel like negative feedback is damaging your brand image, it can actually do the opposite if you handle it in the right way. Instead of ignoring complaints or getting defensive, use feedback as an opportunity to create a connection with shoppers and show you’re willing to help.
\n
\n
TIP: Respond to every complaint—even those that haven’t been sent to you directly. You can also loop back to unhappy customers later down the line to find out how they’re getting on and if their issue has been resolved.
\n
\n
Social media customer service tools
\n
If you have a limited budget or if your social accounts are low on engagement, you’ll probably be able to manage replies directly in each social account, at least at first. If you grow your brand’s social following, however, support requests will grow with it, and a tool built for handling support will become essential for staying on top of things.
\n
Fortunately, the popularity of social media means there are many tools out there that vary widely in features and price. To help you get a lay of the land, here are a few social media monitoring tools worth checking out.
\n
Hootsuite
\n
Hootsuite integrates with more than 25 social networks, and the dashboard is highly customizable. It also allows you to view incoming messages and reply within the dashboard.
\n
Sprout Social
\n
Sprout Social is built to help you manage your social profiles through data collection. It creates a single stream of incoming messages from your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger accounts that you can see in one place.
\n
Away Messaging
\n
Facebook’s in-built Away Messaging feature lets you send an automated response to customers when your customer service reps are offline.
\n
Mention
\n
Mention lets you monitor conversations around your brand and listen to your audience. It brings all mentions into one centralized dashboard for easy viewing.
\n
Social media customer service examples
\n
Here’s how brands are using social media for customer service.
\n
1. Chewy
\n
Pet food brand Chewy is a pioneer of excellent customer service. As well as responding to every negative and positive social media comment, it also takes the time to create personalized pet portraits for customers who have reached out.
\n

\n
When it comes to negative feedback, the brand is quick to respond and provides a number of ways for customers to reach out for more information.
\n

\n
2. Brooklinen
\n
Bedsheet brand Brooklinen is hot on its Twitter customer support. The customer service reps respond almost instantly and quickly decide whether a query requires a more in-depth response via DM.
\n
Image caption: Brooklinen responds to an unhappy customer on Twitter.
\n
Image alt text: Screenshot of a Twitter conversation between bed sheet brand Brooklinen and an unhappy customer.
\n
But Brooklinen doesn’t just respond to complaints and questions. The brand also takes the time to reply to positive mentions in a conversational tone.
\n

\n
3. Bombas
\n
Sock retailer Bombas uses Facebook to respond to unhappy customers. It diligently replies to every bit of feedback—-both good and bad—and often directs shoppers to reach out via DM for a private conversation.
\n
Bombas responds to an unhappy customer on Facebook.
\n
Bombas also takes the opportunity to turn positive brand mentions into something more. It often posts about stock levels and upcoming product launches.
\n
Bombas mentions stock levels of a high-demand collection.
\n
Take your social customer service to the next level
\n
Customer service is changing. Shoppers today expect brands to be on their favorite platforms and respond in hours if not minutes. Take your customer support to the next level by monitoring brand mentions, answering common questions, and reaching out to customers as soon as they have a problem.
\n
With a little planning, you’ll be able to deftly handle the occasional heckler and put on a great show.
\n

\n
\n

\n
\n
\n
Social media customer service FAQ
\n
\n
What is social customer service?
\n
\n
Social customer service is when brands carry out customer support on social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
